Sample Essay on Process Structuring Decisions
1. Rules of thumb are very important guidelines and traditions for any particular industry. I work in hotel industry and rules of thumb play a very significant role in the process of planning and structuring decisions. There are several ways that these rules may be useful for the purpose of improvement of the processes in our organization. For example we can take a rule of thumb that states that hotel’s new clients have to fill in the entrance form correctly. This procedure can help in further on processing of the client’s documents in order for the fastest way of him to receive a quality service. If the client fills in the registration form correctly, receives the right answer from the registration system and therefore he gets the proper service. Also it is important for the client to follow this procedure correctly in order for him to be charged the right amount of funds for the service.
2. Variability is one of the important aspects in making correct business decisions in hotel industry. We see positive and negative effects of the variability in the business process. An example of the negative effect of variability can be seen in charging different amount of money for the same service from different customers. For example a VIP client of a hotel is charged 20% less than any regular client. This is a practice that is performed in most of the Hospitality chains and it has its negative effects because of the people’s self esteem. For example if a new client comes to the hotel registration for getting a room and sees that prices very from regular client to VIP client, and the person is not qualified to be a VIP client he has his self esteem harmed and thus has a negative attitude towards the hotel business operations. In order to avoid such negative effects of the variable of the amount of money charged for certain kind of a service at a hotel, it is necessary to implement a system that has some uniform kind of money charged for same kinds of services.
3. Some bottlenecks in hotel industry appear during busy traveling seasons. The problem is usually in the excess amount of demand for hotel service. This problem is common to most of the hotels through the world and there are numerous imaginable ways for solving it although this appears to be not so easy on practice. For example one of the possible ways to solve this problem is to have sufficient amount of hotels in the area that are able to accommodate customers during busy seasons. But in this case hotels can have problems of low demand during the off-season periods.
Therefore the best way will probably be to increase prices for the service and thus possibly to decrease the amount of people willing to pay high prices, but that way is also a tricky one because of the customer loyalty.
