Sample Essay on Tranquilizers

Tranquilizers that hinder the sympathetic nervous system activity often successfully reduce people’s subjective experience of severe fear and anxiety. Since tranquilizers are barbiturates, which are an anti-depressant, they slow down your internal systems.

The sympathetic nervous system is part of a humans’ autonomic nervous system. It is responsible for rendering all of the necessary actions the body requires to survive. As the sympathetic nervous system speeds up heart rate and inhalation it also slows digestion and other nonessential functions. The system does this to prepare itself for an emergency. This takes place in response to stimuli by using the adrenal glands and hypothalamus. These brain structures work to release the hormones called epinephrine and nor epinephrine.

Such systems as the sympathetic nervous system are inhibited and the opposing system is activated once tranquilizers interfere. In this particular situation the parasympathetic nervous system is triggered to begin it’s job of making the heartbeat and breathing to slow down. Since the body has prepared itself for the innate nature of “fight or flight” it produces emotions. These emotions are fear and anxiety and are the response to the stimuli. The amygdala is the brain area that is sensitive to fear. But is fear a biological predisposition, like how monkeys are terrified of snakes? Or is it learned, as shown in the Little Albert experiment that was conducted by Watson?

One theory of emotion that explains why the tranquilizers can reduce emotion effects is the conjecture provided by James Lang. James Lang suggested that physical response to emotion occurs first. He believes we cry therefore we are sad.

On the other hand, Canon-Bard disagreed therefore their theory wouldn’t support this finding at all. Canon-Bard believes that physical and psychological responses happen simultaneously. Reason being that they think that physical response to emotion alone is not a distinct enough category to decipher between emotions.
