Theory of multiple intelligences is the theory proposed by Howard Gardner in 1983 as a model of intelligence, which considers the intelligence in various specific (primarily sensory) conditions and not as a dominance of a general ability to anything.
Gardner argues that there is a wide range of cognitive abilities and there is only a very weak correlation between them. For example, the theory predicts that a child who is easily trained multiplication, not necessarily tend to be more intelligent than a child who has great difficulty in learning the process. A child who spends more time to master simple multiplication 1) may best learn multiplication through a different approach, 2) may excel in a field outside of mathematics, or 3) may even looks at understanding the process of multiplication on a fundamentally deeper level, or perhaps as a completely different process. Such a fundamentally better understanding can look like a tardiness, but can actually hide mathematical intelligence potentially higher than that of a child who quickly memorizes the multiplication table despite a less deep understanding multiplication process itself.
The theory was met with a mixed reaction and criticism. Traditional intelligence tests in psychometry, usually show a high correlation between different tasks and aspects of intelligence, rather than a low correlation, which Gardner’s theory predicts.
Gardner is consequently is accused of easily ignoring a large part of intelligence research in the last hundred years. Gardner’s theory has strong conceptual weaknesses and also cannot be confirmed empirically. The theory of multiple intelligences is, therefore, no longer seriously discussed within the academic intelligence research. Gardner himself mentioned already at the beginning of his publications in 1982 that many assumptions are speculative and not require empirical examination (Gardner 1982, p.56).
Contrary to Gardner’s claims, it could also be repeatedly demonstrated that both different primary factors of intelligence are highly correlated and the calculated in this way general factor “g” of intelligence allows very good predictions in many areas of life such as school or job performance and income, and the addition of the primary factors has not significantly improved predictive validity of the result.
Nevertheless, many teachers support the practical value of the approaches suggested by the theory.
