Example Essay on Racial Differences and Racism
It is no surprise to everybody that a person’s life and achievements may depend strictly on his/her skin color. It is a known fact that people of different skin colors, namely white and black, earn different amounts of money on average, and take different job positions on average. The following paragraphs discuss how racial discrimination has changed over the past fifty-four years, and how has the black and the white populations reacted to these changes. In addition to racial discrimination, the essay touches upon gender discrimination, which is also extremely important nowadays. All of the statistics mentioned in the essay is derived from the attached documents.
The over-all attainments of the adult population have been gradually changing over the last fifty-four years. The data from the attached documents shows that each decade, starting from 1960’s, contains few more percent of college graduates and high school graduates than the previous one, and at the same time less percent of people who have not finished high school. So the results show undoubtedly that people sought for more education with the flow of time, but not all four groups show the same elevation. The two groups of blacks show more a rapid growth, moreover, the results of group of black females show a more stable growth than results of black males. But on the whole, results of these two groups are more or less the same and they show that blacks attained more education as time went by. Results of the two white groups also show growth, but this growth is not so obvious as compared to the blacks. Plus the over-all results of the whites contain more percent than ones of blacks, and results of white males differ from the results of females, whereas in two black groups results are approximately the same. The gender comparison of two black groups shows that the percentages of college graduates of males and females are the same at the beginning of the period as well as at the end. But percentages of high school graduates differ; through the whole space, males’ percentage has been greater. As for the whites, the table shows that greater percentage of females finished high school in both 1950 and 2000, whereas more men appeared to become college graduates in both 1950 and 2000. However, racial differences have been declining with the flow of time. One can observe that in 1950’s the difference between black males and white males in their years of schooling was rather obvious, while in 2000’s the difference is not that noticeable.
It is truly essential as well as significantly important to note that even though racial differences have been declining, the still remains a huge gap between the earnings of whites and the blacks. In all age groups (25-35, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65+) the difference between earnings is enormous. Although in the graphs of both groups, the curve is concave in the 25 through 44 range and convex in the rest (both reaching maximum values at ~55), the average margin between the two groups is about forty thousand dollars.
The curves indicating the racial differences of earnings of males with a high school diploma maintain the shape of the previous example, only the gap is now a little less, about thirty thousand. The maximum earned by white males is approximately sixty four thousand, while the maximum earned by black males is approximately twenty seven thousand; both achieved at the age of 50.
The difference of earnings of white and black men with a bachelor’s degree is somewhat different from the two previous data collections. First, the gap between the earnings is much greater; here it is over fifty thousand dollars. Secondly, the behavior of both curves is has changed a little; while the concavity in the range between 25 years of age and 44 remained, convexity in the rest of the curve ceased. In lieu of an expected maximum, two curves have another concavity. This way both curves reach maximum values at the age of 60; the white at approximately hundred and sixty thousand, and blacks at fifty-two.
It is obvious that both blacks and whites earn more with a bachelor’s degree than with a high school diploma. For the blacks with a bachelor’s degree, the average earning is about forty thousand dollars, whereas for blacks with a high school diploma the average earnings constitute approximately twenty-five thousand. White males with a bachelor’s degree earn approximately ninety thousand on average, and ones with a high school diploma earn fifty-three thousand dollars on average.
No matter how disappointing it is to note the blacks earning less money and attaining less education, the fact remains. Through history of the United States of America, the attitude toward black people has been not so positive. In the earlier times, the blacks could not even afford entering high school or college, and now, when the situation has changed immensely, traces of the past still manifest. Unfortunately, blacks earn much less money than whites, both women and men, which means that fewer employers desire to hire blacks. This inclination to favoritism, if not racism, results in a very negative way. The logical reasoning is very simple; since fewer blacks are able to work, more of them become criminals, having no other choice. Really, what a person has to do when he/she is literary neglected because of the skin color; moreover it was not his/her fault that he/she was born black. When they understand that chances to acquire respectful position at work, or have a happy future tend to zero, hope fades away, and so people figure that the only way out from the situation is becoming criminals.
As for the ones that took their chances and entered finished high school, and then graduated from a college or a university, their destiny as also in some way deprived. Even though a black person may be much more qualified in a particular area, in most cases a white person gets a job only for being white. Although there are or course exceptions of blacks that earn very huge amounts, still the average amount of earnings is much lesser than the one of whites.
There is also a little difference in earnings between males and females; men, as true toilers by nature, earn more than women, born as housekeepers. This fact is absolutely natural, only one can also observe employers’ inclination to sex discrimination. In most cases males are considered more responsible, self-motivating, they are also considered to perform more objectively in a critical and/or extreme situation. Whereas females are more preferred in service personnel, and other specific areas for their graciousness, charm, as well as intuition and proneness to premonition.
Through the last half-century, both black and white women and men attained more results in education with each consecutive decade. The data from the corresponding tables shows that although racial discrimination does take place during the entire period (1950’s through 2000’s), it occurs rarer in each consecutive decade. At the beginning of the period the gaps between college graduates was about twenty-five percent, and at present times this gap has broken down to ten percent, which means that more blacks seek education and further privileges. But no matter how the percentage changed, the average earnings of the blacks still remain much lesser than the ones of whites, which indicates that racial discrimination does take place even now.
