Example Essay on Muslims

The articles, which are summarized in this essay, deal with different aspects of life of the Muslims in different countries, such as Great Britain, the USA and Turkey.

The article “The Right of Women to No-Fault Divorce in Islam and Its Application by British Muslims”, written by Bustami Mohamed Khir, is focused on women’s right to no-fault divorce. It regards whether contemporary Islamic law gives the possibility to Muslim women to initiate no-fault divorce, and if it does then what the consequences are. Discussing the validity of this right in Muslim countries, the author of the article also pays attention to its existence in the West, taking as a particular case Great Britain. The article concludes that being an important right for women, they usually are limited in its usage. Having examined situation in Britain the author claims that though it was allowed in 1996, it was never applied, while in America no-fault divorce is practiced almost in all states.

The next article under discussion is “Islamist New Thinking in Turkey: A Model for Political Learning?” by Gamze Çavdar. It describes the attempts to make the Middle East more democratic. Particularly, Çavdar focuses on the activity of a Turkish political party AKP (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi) or Justice and Development Party. This party presents a new notion in the political life in Turkey – new thinking, which “is the result of a process of political learning, defined as a change of beliefs (or the degree of confidence in one’s beliefs) or development of new beliefs, skills, or procedures as a result of observation and interpretation of experience” (Çavdar 480). The author states that this model of Turkish Islamists is a progressive means of governing the country, basing on democratic principles. Being the model that hardly would be used elsewhere, new thinking practice is a step towards democracy.

The author of the article “Islam in America”, Peter Skerry, in the very first its paragraph asks the question whether Americans should be afraid of Muslim communities in the American society. The whole article examines this question by reviewing four books that are also devoted to this issue. The first book, “Mecca and Main Street” by Geneive Abdo, examines the problem of treating Muslims in American society, their way of life, particularly, whether Muslim youth keeps to traditions and practices the religion. Another book about Muslims “American Islam: The Struggle for the Soul of a Religion” by Paul Barrett presents the topic even more thoroughly, as the author discusses in detail all the challenges of Muslims in America together with the possibilities of their solution. The third reviewed by Peter Skerry book is “Muslims in the United States”, written by Ilyas Ba-Yunus and Kassim Kone, Muslim immigrants. Here while praising the book for the authors’ observations on such details as the status of imam in America and the high divorce rate among middle aged Muslim women, Peter Skerry points to factual mistakes, such as misrepresentation of dates and places. Steven Emmerson, the author of the last reviewed book “Jihad Incorporated: A Guide to Militant Islam in the U.S.” emphasizes that today there are terrorist organizations in the USA, which work here and may again cause harm to America. Thus, Peter Skerry presents different views upon the position of Muslims in America and claims that these books help us to learn more about Muslims.
